What is a mezuzah? Derived from the Biblical word for doorpost, where by Torah Law they should be placed, a mezuzah is a parchment made from the skin of a kosher species of animal upon which a specially trained scribe (sofer) has inscribed the first two paragraphs of The Shema (Devarim 6:4-9 and Devarim 11:13-21) using special ink and specially designed feather to write with. A mezuzah is so holy that even the slightest mistake can invalidate it. Therefore mezuzoth should be inspected every few years by a trained sofer. |
